CONFERENCE 2024
We are delighted to host a conference titled “Cultures of Automobility” at the University of Konstanz from October 10-12, 2024.
Keynote speakers: Lutz Koepnick (Vanderbildt University) and Stéphanie Ponsavady (Wesleyan University)
The conference program can be downloaded here.
TRAVEL & ACCOMODATION
The city of Konstanz collects a climate and tourism tax of 5.6% of your hotel fee from all persons above the age of 18. The tax comes with a free bus ticket and a “Bodenseecard West” (reduced rates for several tourist activities).
GETTING TO KONSTANZ
Konstanz is reachable by German and Swiss railroad services as well as overland buses such as Flixbus.
The closest airports are Zurich and Friedrichshafen, at about one hour from Konstanz. If you are traveling on a visa, note that Zurich is in Switzerland whereas Konstanz is in Germany.
Direct train service from Zurich airport to Konstanz can be booked from the SBB (Swiss Railroad).
Trains and buses from Friedrichshafen airport to Konstanz can be booked from the DB (German Railroad).
GETTING AROUND IN KONSTANZ
The conference will take place on the University of Konstanz campus, in buildings G and H. Lunches will be served in the cafeteria.

BY BUS:
Buses run regularly between downtown and campus. Schedules can be found on the DB website and on Google Maps. Tickets can be bought from the driver.
For buildings G and H, the best connection is line 4/13 (not to be confused with 13/4) to Egg/Universität. Due to construction work, line 4/13 currently does not run from the train station, but “Stephansschule”, which is about a 10 min walk (see the map) from there. Once at the university bus stop, cross the bridge above and walk straight up the hill to entrance G2. Walk up the staricase to the second or third floor for the G rooms. Walk across the skyway on the third floor for the H rooms and the conference office.
For the university main building, the best connection is line 9 (A, B, or C), which runs from the train station. Follow the signs to “Haupteingang” from the bus stop. Everyone who gets of the bus will be walking in the same direction.
Of course, you can get to any building from either bus stop, but factor in at least ten minutes for the walk. There will be signs in the hallways.
BY BICYCLE:
Konstanz is a small city and very accessible by bike. The municipal provider konrad offers rental bikes at various locations throughout the city. The university and all other conference venues all have a bike station on site or within walking distance—locations are shown in the app.
To rent a bike, download the free Mein konrad app from the App Store/Google Play Store and register with your personal information and credit card or direct debit. The rates are 1€/30min or 9€/day. You can then leave your bike at any other konrad station in the city. Make sure to check out via your app after using the bike.
BY CAR:
There are three parking lots on the university campus—Nord, Süd, and Ost. Factor in 10-15 minutes to walk from the parking lots to the conference buildings. While the university campus is very safe, some users prefer parking lot Nord after dark because of the well-lighted walkway.
